To compete in a tough job market, many workers choose to seek more education, improving their skills in their current profession or making completely new career choices. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the cost of financing your post-secondary education can pay off. Statistics show individuals with higher education have lower unemployment rates and higher salaries, on average, than those with less education. In 2009, the BLS reported the following statistics:
  • People with a master's degree had a 3.9 percent unemployment rate compared to 9.7 percent for those with a high school diploma
  • Workers with a bachelor's degree made median weekly earnings of $1,025 compared to $626 for those with a high school diploma
In Pennsylvania, unemployment stood at 8.6 percent at the end of 2010, so a degree from one of Pennsylvania's many colleges and universities can help set you apart.

Attending Colleges in Pennsylvania
The benefits of attending colleges in Pennsylvania might include greater chances of finding employment or moving up in your career. Of the nearly 6 million Pennsylvania residents in the workforce, nearly one-quarter hold a bachelor's degree or better. Pennsylvania universities can provide the education you need to enter that workforce.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were 257 degree granting post-secondary institutions in Pennsylvania in 2008-2009 serving an undergraduate student population of over 600,000.

The cost of a college education is a significant investment. However, the National Report Card on Higher Education reports that Pennsylvania invests significantly in financial aid for students. Despite this investment, the cost of college is rising in the state, making it difficult for students to afford tuition and fees without loans and scholarships.

According to the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, there is financial aid available to Pennsylvania students in the form of state grants, loans, and work-study programs. You can also apply for federal financial aid, which consists of grants, scholarships, loans and work-study programs.
