In late July we posted an entry (‘Decolonising our universities: another world is desirable‘) that profiled a conference statement reflecting significant unease regarding the dominance of the ‘Western’ model of higher education, including the university. A few weeks later, Ben Wildavsky posted a response (‘Academic Colonialism, False Consciousness, and the Western University Ideal‘). In our minds both contributions include valid points, but they both contain a significant number of generalizations: lines are drawn, and nuance and shades of grey are missing — a point one of us (Kris Olds) also made in a mid-August dialogue via Twitter with Ben Wildavsky, though Ben obviously disagreed!
