What’s it all about?
Project management degree programs will provide you with a solid grounding in a base of core elements. These will equip you with skills necessary to lead projects in any industry you choose. You’ll learn to develop the necessary critical thinking and analytical skills needed to view projects at all stages. From pre-planning through to commencement and the final product, a project manager takes responsibility the whole way through. Not only will a project management degree equip you with the attributes to do this, but you’re highly likely to be able to specialize somewhat in your chosen discipline in the latter stages of your course. By first learning the in-depth aspects of the wider perspectives of project management, this then makes it possible to narrow down your field of study to create a knowledge base that’s more industry specific.

What will I learn?
All colleges and universities will present their curriculum in a way individual to that school. However, all project management degree programs will cover the following:

  • The fundamental aims and areas of project management
  • Key principles and industry practices.
  • Pre-planning, planning and project control.
  • Risk assessment and safety management
  • Project organization and behavior
  • Project strategies
  • Leadership, teamwork and communication skills
  • Various technical implementations relating to your choice of specialized areas of project management.
  • Project analysis, critical thinking and problem solving.

How will I learn?
Project management degree programs utilize both theoretical and practical learning to deliver your education. By first understanding the theory behind the skills, you’ll then move onto working on a significant range of key professional and business specific areas. This will not only help develop your critical and analytical skills, but open your mind to the various different methods of problem solving and forward thinking necessary to successfully work in this area. Expect to complete a variety of different types of projects, including mock ups of real life business scenarios in which you’ll have to pinpoint potential problems and create practical solutions that’ll allow the project to continue to its planned targets. Teamwork, as well as leadership, will make up a vital area of your study, along with the various communication skills that are essential to being successful in this highly responsible role.

After gaining my degree, what options are open to me for employment?
Once you’ve completed your project management degree then you can take advantage of your training in practically any industry you care to think of. From the world of business to that of healthcare; IT to human resources – good project managers are highly sought after and can command very healthy salaries. Very often project management positions are outsourced by larger companies. This makes contract work very common in the project management industry, and due to this a lot of project managers work on a self-employed basis.« Collapse
