 How Degrees in Accounting Can Lead to Humor
Accounting degrees and humor go hand-and-hand. Just ask Certified Public Accountant (CPA)/stand-up comedian John Garrett. After completing his degree in accounting and earning his CPA license, Garrett publicized a connection many don't see; as Garrett put it: "being the funniest accountant is kind of like driving the fastest minivan."
While degrees in accounting won't necessarily make you funny, they can prepare you for a rewarding career. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts a 22 percent increase, representing 279,400 jobs, in accounting/auditing jobs between 2008 and 2018. Pay can also be rewarding, says the BLS. In 2009, accountants and auditors enjoyed median salaries of $60,340 with the top 10 percent earning a median $104,450.

A good accounting degree program can also prevent you from becoming part of a top-10 David Letterman list. Like Garrett, Letterman has no problem connecting the dots between accounting degrees and humor. Here is a sample from his "Top 10 Signs You've Hired a Bad Accountant":
- Instead of IRS, sends your completed tax return to UPS.
- Lets you list your imaginary friend as a dependent.
- Lists every time you laughed at Letterman as a "charitable donation."
