It wasn't so long ago that visions of the future included robots who served as butlers, kitchens that cooked on command, and cars that drove themselves--all thanks to envisioned advances in computer science degree programs. If you're interested in helping to build the perfect robot or pushing the boundaries of computer science, university programs can help you find the training you need.

While people used to dream of a future in which robots replaced people in carrying out household tasks, those visions aren't as far-fetched as you might imagine. While computers can't yet whip up a bowl of spaghetti, they have replaced some men (and women): just ask your computer science school professor. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the following occupations should experience the greatest employment decrease, because of computers, between 2004 and 2014:

  • Meter readers, utilities: -45 percent
  • Shuttle car operators: -42 percent
  • Credit authorizers, checkers, and clerks: -41 percent

If you're pursuing a degree in computer science, there's good news; those who earn computer skills as can be gained from computer science colleges should stand out from the crowd. This is because even automated systems need people creating/maintaining the automation. Students of computer science degree programs should think of themselves not so much as whizzes, but as wizards like The Wizard of Oz wizard.)

Your computer science degree program won't teach you how to run the buttons and levers of Oz; but true computer whizzes will say what you'll learn in computer science school is much cooler. This might include:

  • Java
  • Computer architecture
  • Advanced programming, including object-oriented programming
  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Software development
And while the Wizard had only Oz to run, earning a degree in computer science can leave the entire world at your fingertips.
