A Plumbing School Can Get You Started in Your Plumbing Career
Plumbers can enter the career field several ways. You can work as a plumber's assistant for a couple of years and attend plumbing trade schools during your off hours, or you can get plumbing training by participating in an apprenticeship program while working as a helper. Apprenticeship programs are often sponsored by national plumbing organizations and consist of on-the-job plumbing training and taking plumbing college classes on a part-time basis.

Plumbing classes are offered at many junior or community colleges. These plumbing college courses usually cover general plumber training and then allow you to take classes in a specific field of plumbing such as:
  • Residential plumbing
  • Commercial plumbing
  • Pipelaying
  • Steamfitting
  • Pipefitting
Larger plumbing companies often prefer that you have training from plumbing schools before possible advancement into management or supervisory positions.
